I have the honor to report the

following modifications in the Magistênc and Police Department, to take place from

the Pt. January next.

My Despatch N 137 of 24th November, has abready announced that the Salary of the Chief Magestrate, Sheriff, and Provost. Marshal, is to be £1000 per

annum, instead of £1200, subject to your Lordship's approval.

The great want in our Police is that knowledge of the language and habits of the Chinese so requisite to the pursuit and detection of guilt. Mr
